How it all works

Oak frame journey

We often get asked about how it all works, the build process and our level of involvement.

We offer various levels of support and involvement depending on your needs. We can offer a one stop solution taking care of all areas of design, planning through to construction of your oak frame. Alternatively we would be happy to work with your architect or builder.

The process, generally takes the following route:

In-house design service and planning assistance

In-house design service and planning assistance

Good design is at the heart of every Welsh Oak Frame Project and is the key to getting it right. Whether you would like to build a large family home or a modest extension, realising your ideas on paper is the first step in a Welsh Oak Frame project. Our expert in-house architectural design service is geared to suit you and your project, and is offered at a realistic cost as part of our package of services.

Firstly, one of our expert in-house architectural designers will meet with you, take time to listen to what you want and discuss your thoughts and requirements. Based on this meeting, a collection of sympathetic and intuitive designs will be created bringing your ideas to life, then adjusted, to produce a carefully considered final design that is completely bespoke to you, created to your brief, to suit you, your surrounding landscapes and buildings and the way you live. We offer good advice on the best use of space, the different styles of frame and how to get the most from your budget.

Our service includes taking care of all areas of the design and planning of your project, including the preparation and submission of the planning application, building regulations and structural calculations. Alternatively, if you have plans and planning permission in place already, we are happy to work with your architect.

Once approved, we use sophisticated software to take these designs to the next level.

Interactive frame design

Interactive frame design

Once your initial concept designs have been approved by both yourself and your local planning authority, we take them to the next level where our experienced in-house frame designers will turn your designs into a fully-interactive model, creating a virtual ‘walk-through’ so you can  visualise, explore, adjust and refine every last detail of your project.

The careful detailing of the frame at this stage enables accurate costing, ensures the project will be a success and that when complete, each frame is a pleasure to live with.

Manufacturing / installation

Manufacturing / installation

The care and attention to detail applied at the design stage is continued throughout the manufacturing and construction phase, ensuring your oak frame will be of the absolute highest standard.

Our craftsmen take advantage of oak’s outstanding natural qualities by using proven traditional methods, which we combine with contemporary engineering techniques to construct an oak frame to precise degrees of accuracy. It takes an experienced eye to note the particular traits within the grain of an oak timber and decide how best to use it, and it is this priceless knowledge that makes our frames unique.

The difference is in the detail and each one of our oak frames is created and finished by hand, with care to highly accurate tolerances which is lost with frames produced by CNC machinery. These small elements of detail such as the subtle curving of the beam and chamfered edges which make all the difference to the finished appearance of the frame.

On site, our installation crews work conscientiously and diligently, always with precise attention to detail. Together they make an excellent team, well-versed in on-site problem solving, and individually they are hard-working, polite and friendly; quite simply a pleasure to have around!
