Self-build tip: Foster good relationships
Fostering good relationships is key to a successful self-build. It starts with your neighbours, who even if they don’t share your dream, will at least have to tolerate it so they don’t object to your plans. Their patience will undoubtedly be tested during what will be a lengthy, often noisy building process. You will also need to develop a good working relationship with your architect if you are to get the best design. Having a good relationship with planners and local councillors is also important when it comes to persuading them of the merits of your project. Then, of course, there is the actual build. Whether you decide to manage it yourself, or take a step back and employ someone to do so on your behalf, there will be times when relations are strained – especially when things don’t go according to plan. The most important relationship is the one you have with your partner with whom you share your dream. Undoubtedly, you wont agree on everything however comprise will often be the key to compatibility.
